Why it matters

A title that reads well in your CMS can still lose its key phrase when a search result shortens it.

How it works

FixWeb draws each title in Arimo, a font with Arial's letter widths, at 20 px and measures it. Titles in scripts that font does not cover, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Arabic, are reported as not measured.

Site impact

When the differentiator is clipped, searchers see a generic or incomplete result even when the page is relevant.

How FixWeb tests for it

Under about 550 px a title counts as fitting, 550 to 600 px may be cut, and over 600 px is likely to be cut; the report marks where about 580 px falls in the title. Google publishes no length limit and may rewrite titles, so this is an estimate.

How to improve

Put the page topic and what sets it apart first, drop boilerplate such as a repeated tagline, and check the result again after changing the title template.

Run it on your own site
